Fighting for Families Impacted by IncarcerationWe can’t wait to get more books to this wonderful organization that helps incarcerated moms, dads and grandparents stay connected to the children in their lives – through the simple yet profound act of reading them a story, which is recorded and sent along with the book to the child. Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs is a popular selection for this program, and they are eagerly awaiting the bilingual version: “Your book “Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs” is a favorite of the incarcerated men and women in our Family2Child Literacy program. We have recorded moms, dads, and grandparents who read through their tears and expressed such joy at being able to express themselves through sun kisses, moon hugs and x’s and o’s. It deeply resonates with the parents as the story is timeless, suitable for all ages and especially allows them to express their love from behind bars. As many of the incarcerated parents are Spanish speakers, a bilingual version of the books would have a huge impact on the families we serve. We have a large number of participants who read to their children in Spanish and a bilingual version would also serve to foster bilingual language skills in the children who receive the book along with their loved one’s recording. Thank you again for your support of our program and our incarcerated families!” --Sandra Gonzales, Director of Operations and Development Maintaining a positive connection with an incarcerated parent can reduce the effects of trauma and lead to much healthier outcomes for both the child AND the parent!
