Every night in the United States, too many children go to sleep uncertain of what tomorrow will bring -- and that compromises their health, school performance, and emotional well-being. Pajama Program works with more than 4,000 community partners across the United States and Puerto Rico to provide kids with cozy pajamas, inspiring storybooks, and critical resources for parents and caregivers. After all, their motto is “Good Nights Are Good Days”! Pajama Program also maintains Reading Centers in New York City and Atlanta, where children visit and connect with caring volunteers, spend an hour reading, and leave with a new pair of pajamas and a new book to keep! Here’s a link to a video featuring Pajama Program founder Genevieve Piturro that explains how her work with foster children inspired this program, and all they’ve achieved since then: https://pajamaprogram.org/our-story/ Besos de sol, abrazos de luna (the bilingual version of Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs) is an ideal book for this program, and we’re excited to know that it will become part of Pajama Program’s cozy bedtime routines to comfort and reassure children, as well as strengthen kids’ bonds to their parents and caregivers. The books we donate will be distributed by Pajama Partners to the community partner programs that need them most, including group homes, shelters, foster care agencies and Headstart programs. Fighting for Families Impacted by IncarcerationWe can’t wait to get more books to this wonderful organization that helps incarcerated moms, dads and grandparents stay connected to the children in their lives – through the simple yet profound act of reading them a story, which is recorded and sent along with the book to the child. Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs is a popular selection for this program, and they are eagerly awaiting the bilingual version: “Your book “Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs” is a favorite of the incarcerated men and women in our Family2Child Literacy program. We have recorded moms, dads, and grandparents who read through their tears and expressed such joy at being able to express themselves through sun kisses, moon hugs and x’s and o’s. It deeply resonates with the parents as the story is timeless, suitable for all ages and especially allows them to express their love from behind bars. As many of the incarcerated parents are Spanish speakers, a bilingual version of the books would have a huge impact on the families we serve. We have a large number of participants who read to their children in Spanish and a bilingual version would also serve to foster bilingual language skills in the children who receive the book along with their loved one’s recording. Thank you again for your support of our program and our incarcerated families!” --Sandra Gonzales, Director of Operations and Development Maintaining a positive connection with an incarcerated parent can reduce the effects of trauma and lead to much healthier outcomes for both the child AND the parent! We’re so proud to once again work with A Window Between Worlds to get books into the hands of children dealing with grief and trauma. AWBW currently uses Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs and a companion art project we helped create as one of the many tools they use with their participants to help facilitate healing. Now with the new bilingual edition, Besos de sol, abrazos de luna, we hope to expand the message of love and healing to even more children. “We’ve found that offering bilingual materials allows more people to participate in our program’s art activities, expanding our capability to empower families on their healing journeys." --Emily Anne Evans, AWBW “I get sad when I think about my dad, I miss him, but I know I can’t see him right now. But if I look at the moon every night I know he is looking at it, too.” --Participant, age 7, Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs workshop, Central CA Family Crisis Center If you’d like to support our efforts to donate books to AWBW, please visit our Kickstarter campaign at the link below. Thank you! More About A WINDOW BETWEEN WORLDSMISSION To empower individuals and communities impacted by violence and trauma through a transformative healing arts program. VISION A Window Between Worlds views art as a catalyst to release trauma, build resilience and ignite social change. When individuals create art in a safe community they can be heard and respected — replacing violence and shame with safety and hope. YOUTH Children and youth often lack the words to describe their experiences. A Window Between Worlds collaborates with multiple agencies and education centers nationwide that provide essential services to youth who have witnessed or experienced violence, along with those who are in the foster and juvenile justice systems.
